So this past weekend i had the privlege of playing the United States Ametuer Disc Golf Championship, and i was overly impressed with the entire event. The player packs were great, the staff was friendly and helpful and the course was incredible. Having lunch at the course for after your round was great because the course is exhausting and Mark Ellis' Lizzard games were a silly and fun way to decompress after some grueling compition.
The Tournement fourmant was a round a day for three days, with tee times everyday. The first two rounds you get grouped by your player rating, and the tee times were set up with the lower rated players teeing off early on friday and the highest rated players teeing off in the afternoon. On saturday the times were switched so everyone got a morning round and an afternoon round.
Round 1
Because of my player rating, I had a 8 AM tee time on friday. I got off to a shaky start and had to make a 40 foot jump putt on the first hole to save my 3, but followed that with a birdie 4 on the second hole. I played strong till the middle of the round when i took a 5 and a couple stupid 4s. I finished strong even though i didnt card a single 2 in the first round. i finished with a 61 and was actually leading the tournement for an hour or so till some of the higher rated cards came in.
Round 2
I teed off the second round at 1 PM, and the waiting around to play may have gotten to me a bit, because i just couldnt seem to get it going early that round. I took two fives and four 4s to shoot a 3 over 35 on the front nine, but finished strong shooting par on the backside, including carding my only 2 of the event on hole 16. A disappointing 65 dropped me down the list to a tie for 48th.
Final Round
I really wanted to finish the event strong with a round in the 50s, and was well on my way, carding only three 4s through the first 12 holes. Unfortunately i took 4s on the next three holes, including my only three putt(turning a possible 2 into a 4) and one of only three missed putts from inside the circle for the weekend. After missing the deuceable 16th hole, i came to 17 needing a three to shoot my hot round for the event and finish at 60. I bombed my drive and thew a great upshot up the hill to just inside the circle. After knocking down the putt and getting a clean drive on 18, i missed my goal by only one stroke and carded a 60. that round jumped me up 20 spots to a tie for 28th.
All in all this was a great event, on an incredible course and i was very proud of myself for competeing at the level i did, shooting all three rounds well above my rating, and winning all three of the cards i was on, including the final round where i played with 3 950 or higher rated players. If you get the oppurtunity to play this event, on this challenging course, i suggest you dont pass it up.
